Safety Tips
- Program 619-594-1991, the SDSU Public Safety emergency number, into your cell phone so you can access it at a moment's notice.
- If you are more than one mile away from campus and fee threatened, call 911. Otherwise, if you are close to campus, dial 619-594-1991 as they will be able to assist you faster.
- Avoid walking alone at night -- always walk in a group, if possible.
- If you are walking with a laptop, put the laptop in your backpack before you begin to walk. Make sure it is concealed and that no one has seen it.
- Take public transportation or ride a bike rather than walk, if possible.
- Avoid shortcuts and dark, isolated areas.
- Walk purposefully, know where you are going, and project a no-nonsense image. Don’t look preoccupied on your cell phone. Predators are attracted to people who look unaware or lost.
- If you feel threatened, cross the street, locate an emergency phone, or enter a store or place of business even if you have just left it. Knock on someone’s door and tell them to call the police.
- Have your door keys ready; carry them in your pockets, not buried in a purse or backpack.
- Put a whistle on your keychain to attract attention to yourself if you feel threatened.
