Student Assistant Positions at ISC
The International Student Center offers a wide variety of employment opportunities for both international and U.S. students. Position descriptions are provided below. Openings occur on an on-going basis and competition for positions is strong, so it is wise to keep an application on file with the ISC each semester.
General Eligibility Requirements : International students must be enrolled full time and hold F-1 or J-1 visas. U.S. students must be eligible for the Federal Work-Study Financial Aid Program.
Compensation: Wages range from $7.50 to $12 per hour depending upon job duties and past experience. International students are usually compensated through tuition waivers, and U.S. students are usually paid through their work-study allocation.

International Admissions Assistant (Undergraduates Only)
The International Admissions Assistant reports directly to the Assistant Director for Recruitment and Communications and the Admissions Assistant. This position is responsible for assisting prospective international students during the application process. Duties include: assisting students in applying to the university, answering inquiries from prospective students, data entry, and Web 2.0 marketing projects. This position requires a great deal of attention to detail in assuring that prospective international students receive correct and timely information.
Qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview to take place in the week of December 7 -11. The position will start January 13, 2010.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Admissions Administrative Support
- Phone, filing, data entry, email and phone inquiries
- Welcoming and assisting prospective students who visit the ISC Admissions Office
- Help with new student orientation at the beginning of each semester
- Student Advising
- Help international applicants understand how to fill out the application and the admissions process
- Help admitted students prepare to enter SDSU
- Web 2.0 (social networking and video development)
- Help to organize the production of ISC marketing videos
- Involvement in social networking and blogging
- Help reviewing the prospective student web site to make sure all information is accurate and current
- Other Projects as Assigned

International Peer Assistant
Inter national Peer Assistants work under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager and are responsible for a variety of recepton and clerical tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- help students and visitors feel welcome and at home at the ISC;
- answer questions by phone and in person;
- screen phone calls to staff members;
- make appointments for ISC staff;
- help students understand how to fill out forms;
- help with new student orientation each semester and with other ISC events;
- filing, copying, data entry, large mailings, typing, using the computer, and many other clerical tasks.

Positions vary between 10 and 20 hours per week.
ISC Custodial Monitor
ISC Custodial Monitors work under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager and are responsible for preparing, overseeing, and concluding various group events held at the ISC.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- confirm event dates and times in collaboration with with Operations Manager;
- coordinate set-up and break-down of equipment prior to and after events
- assist event sponsors with equipment as needed and remain available during events for assistance and building security;
- perform general cleaning of the facility after each event and re-set the facility to standard set-up.
Desired Qualifications:
- responsible, reliable and punctual;
- customer service experience and strong public relations skills;
- detail oriented and meticulous in terms of neatness, cleanliness and aesthetics;
- takes pride in how things look, and initiates appropriate actions when things are disorderly, damaged, or dirty;

- ability to lift and move heavy furniture (20lbs +)
Work Hours:
Up to 20 hours a week depending on the number of events scheduled. This position requires a flexible schedule as some events are held after office hours or on weekends.
ISC Facility Coordinator
The ISC Facility Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager and is responsible for maintaining the neatness, cleanliness and security of the International Student Center. The Facility Coordinator follows a set maintenance routine that includes regular upkeep and cleaning of the meeting room, reception, kitchen, entryway and patio area. Strong attention to detail and sense of "ownership" is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- arrange furniture
- vacuum, sweep and/or mop floors;
- scrub/dust/polish tables and chairs;
- empty waste baskets;
- clean kitchen counters and appliances;
- spot clean carpet and furniture;
- clean windows and blinds;
- wipe down doors and walls;
- clean patio area, empty ash trays;
- maintain supply inventory and report maintenance needs.

Study Abroad Peer Advisor
Study Abroad Peer Advisors work under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director for Education Abroad and are responsible for helping prospective, current and former study abroad students.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Advise students on SDSU’s study abroad/exchange programs
- Answer telephone and email inquiries about study abroad
- Assist in designing a Study Abroad resource library in the ISC
- Assist with marketing the program to students on campus
- General office work as required: word processing, designing flyers, etc.
- Work as a team with other Peer Advisors involved in completing various projects
- In-depth research of Study Abroad programs and opportunities
- Supervise work area in absence of Study Abroad Advisor
- Compile reports as requested
Desired Qualifications:
- Willing to investigate and familiarize self with a host of study/exchange programs
- Enthusiasm and good interpersonal skills
- Good communication style both in writing and in presentation
- Excellent public speaking abilities to large groups and/or individuals
- Advanced clerical skills including familiarization with Microsoft Office, database management, and answering office phones

- Specialized knowledge of graphic design programs a plus
- Ability to handle numerous tasks at once

Admissions Assistant for Incoming Exchange Programs
Being an Admissions Assistant at the International Student Center involves entering admissions applications into a database, assisting exchange students who are applying to SDSU to understand what documents are necessary for admittance to the university. This position requires a great deal of attention to detail in assuring that prospective international exchange students receive the correct and timely information requested.
Being an assistant at the ISC also means helping with new student orientation at the beginning of each semester and other events at the center. Other duties include filing, copying, data entry, large mailings, typing, using the computer, and many other miscellaneous tasks.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist Exchange Program Coordinator to correspond with prospective exchange students via email regarding the following matters:
- Application Assistance, ensure applications are complete
- Questions pertaining to:
- Classes, Majors and Placement levels
- Employment opportunities/authorization
- Registration
- Orientation
- Health Insurance, F-and I-Holds
- CSU- IP and ISEP specific matters (special fees)
Assist Exchange Program Coordinator with updating the following exchange materials :
- Welcome Packets (content which pertains to Exchange Students)
- Steps to Enrollment which accompany Welcome Packets
- Academic Training Handout
- Request for Extensions/Procedure Handout
- Q&A for Exchange Students
- Q &A for New Overseas Coordinators
- &A for faculty who have developed new agreements
Assist Exchange Program Coordinator with the issuance and mailing of SDSU Transcripts (for students after they have participated in exchange program).

IT Student Assistant (Newly admitted Graduate Students only)
The IT Student Assistant reports directly to the ISC Assistant Director. The IT Student Assistant is responsible for maintaining the ISC network, assisting with the ISC database development, providing desktop support to ISC Staff, documenting ISC IT procedures and processes, helping with web development, maintaining the integrity of the IT system, providing purchasing support for equipment, and other duties as assigned.

This position is only open to newly admitted graduate students. Graduate students who have attended SDSU in the past are not eligible.
Admissions and Marketing Student Assistant (Newly admitted Graduate Students only)
The Admissions and Marketing Student Assistant reports directly to the ISC Admissions Coordinator and the Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator.
This position is responsible for entering admissions inquiries and applications into a database, assisting students in applying to the university, helping students to identify the required documentation, and organizing large mailings to prospective students. This position requires a great deal of attention to detail in assuring that prospective international students receive correct and timely information.
This position will also be responsible for assisting with implementation of marketing projects, including video development, organizing on-line marketing campaigns, administrative oversight of the admissions forum, helping with web development, answering inquiry email from prospective students, and other duties as assigned.
