Tips for Parents
- In choosing the right school in California, keep in mind the differences between the California State University (CSU), University of California (UC), Private Schools, and the Community College systems. For more information on these differences, visit our Choosing a School page.
- Whenever possible, encourage your son or daughter to visit the different schools they are applying to. Taking a campus tour and meeting with representatives from the department (ie. Business, Engineering, Computer Science, etc.) is always recommended.
- Your son or daughter will be living in the chosen city for a number of years, so make sure that they have done research on the area. For more information on San Diego, you can visit our San Diego Life section.
- Support, and at the same time, foster independence. Remember that when students are away at school, they will need to take responsibility for their own administrative affairs, such as enrollment, timetables, course registration, and paying bills. The University will communicate with the student through their SDSU WebPortal account from the time of application through graduation about all administrative matters.
- Encourage your student to request more information, such as campus demographics and the student to teacher ratio. The Admissions Staff at the International Student Center is here to help and we look forward to hearing from you.
