Academics
for Study Abroad Students

Academic Adjustment

Each country has a unique higher educational system, so do not expect academics (lectures, assignments, exams, and other requirements) to operate the same as at SDSU.

For example, in some countries, your ultimate grade may depend only on a final exam and/or research paper. Your studies may also be more individualized or self-paced than at SDSU.

Be patient with yourself because you will be navigating a new academic culture and dealing with multiple distractions.

Recommendations:

  • Take your classes abroad as seriously as you would if they were at SDSU —maybe even more so.
  • Be proactive and seek clarification if necessary early on
  • Ask your professors and classmates about what to expect. Find out what the serious, high-achieving students are doing and follow their lead.
  • Be prepared to actively seek out academic assistance because it may not be advertised
  • Ask your professors about the possibility of tutoring, extra credit, or make-up coursework keeping in mind terminology may be different
