A. Financial Aid Programs

Students are presently surprised to learn that they may use their state and federal financial aid on approved study abroad programs. In fact, over $280,000 in aid was distributed to study abroad students last year alone. For students participating in one of SDSU's own semester or year programs (including ISEP, CSU-IP, exchanges and departmental programs) in addition to their state and federal aid, students may also take departmental or university sponsored aid. For details on this, please refer to Financial Aid's website by clicking here.

For students who opt out of SDSU's programs and prefer to go on one of over 10,000 programs abroad, they must first make sure that they meet the eligibility requirements.

a) Students must seek permission from both the Education Abroad Office AND their appropriate department advisor for approval of a program they select.
b) The program must provide a formal transcript for coursework completed (preferably issued by an accredited institution either here in the US or abroad).
c) If students are going on programs directly sponsored by another accredited institution here in the US (i.e. Butler University, University Nevada-Reno etc.) they must complete the Consortial Agreement Form (pdf file)
d) If students participate in an approved non-institutional program (i.e. AIFS, CEA, ISA etc.) then they must complete the Contractual Agreement Form (pdf file)

Remember, even if you do not think that you are eligible for financial aid, we encourage you to apply by the appropriate deadlines at http://www.sa.sdsu.edu/fao/SpecialEnrollmentProgs/SEP_stud_abroad.html since our Financial Aid Office will take into consideration expenses such as airfare, health insurance, loss of employment while abroad etc. as part of your aid package. Further questions should be directed to Angie Caruso in Financial Aid at 594-1632.

More Resources:

Many cities have branches of international friendship organizations, such as Alliance Française, Goethe Clubs, the Dante Aligheieri Society, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Sister Cities and the League of United Latin American Citizens. Many such organizations (most can be found on the internet) have modest programs that aid students who study or do research in their country of interest. Check your area to identify these organizations and to see if they have scholarship programs.
