Locale
South Australia, the festival state of Australia, is about the same size as the state of Texas, or of France, Spain and Portugal combined. It is a state of contrasting physical environments, from the ruggedly beautiful Flinders Ranges in the north to the rich farmlands of the South East. The Murray River is South Australia's lifeblood, dissecting the state as it courses its way to the river mouth south of Adelaide. South Australia is internationally renowned for its wines. They are produced from the vineyards of the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, the Southern Vales and the Coonawarra. South Australia is a state of innovation and dynamic development. It attracts investment from international and Australian companies involved in all areas of industry. It is Australia's manufacturing center for both the automobile industry and defense research, and leads the country in laser technology, silicon chip design and medical research. South Australia's economy is well boosted by its wealth of underground natural resources. The State's mining industry has long thrived on the deposits found in the Coober Pedy opal fields, Leigh Creek coal fields, uranium, copper and gold deposits of Roxby Downs and the gas fields of Moomba. South Australia, Australia's third largest State by area, has a population of just over 1.5 million. Time: Central Standard time is 9.5 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
