Parents and Friends: Financing for study abroad.
We know that family and friends have many questions related to finances and study abroad. SDSU is committed to finding affordable study abroad options for students. This is why we offer a variety of options:
California State University programs: These programs (many in existence from the early 1960's) are specifically designed to accommodate most CSU students with costs that are equal to or in many cases, less than a typical year on one's home campus. There is an excellent section on the IP website concerning costs (click here) and the Education Abroad Office has a very helpful cost guide entitled "Financing Your Year Abroad" that is available for taking .
In addition, SDSU offers exchanges with over 140 institutions of higher learning abroad. Through these and our affiliation with the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), student continue to pay their registration fees to SDSU and again utilize their financial aid for programs that generally run at equal cost to a typical semester on campus or in some cases, even less expensive. Details on estimated costs can be found here.
Finally, SDSU offers a variety of short-term spring break, winter break and summer programs for students who find it difficult to spend a longer period of time away. Costs for these programs vary. Consult our website.
Keep in mind that SDSU allows financial aid to travel with students on most study abroad programs. In some cases, where costs are substantially more expensive than at home (ex. Japan ), students may be eligible for additional aid. For more specific information, students should contact Financial Aid for further details. A good place to start is the Financial Aid website.
Also, bear in mind that on most programs, SDSU requires verification of on-site enrollment before financial aid will be disbursed. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that important contact information and enrollment information is forwarded to our Disbursements Office in a timely manner. We stress that students should be prepared to cover up front costs (plane ticket, visa, passport, and 1 st month's accommodation) before receiving their aid.
Should you have any questions about financial aid, please do not hesitate to contact us at studyabroad@sdsu.edu
