Profile: Founded in 1991, following the fall of communist governments across Eastern Europe, American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) was established in order to educate future leaders committed to serving the needs of the region by promoting the values of an open democratic society. AUBG is a highly selective, private, residential university awarding Baccalaureate degrees accredited in both the United States and Bulgaria. It offers American-style liberal arts education with English as the language of instruction.
AUBG is a multicultural institution and provides an unrivaled cultural experience. Forty percent of the student body is non-Bulgarian from over 24 countries. The majority of students come from countries in the southeastern region of Europe where ethnic and religious tensions have often been high and turmoil common. As a result, students value what brings them together instead of what divides them. The university also promotes educational outreach programs to serve the wider community.
Locale: The main AUBG building is located in the center of Blagoevgrad. The city of Blagoevgrad is the administrative and economic center of southwestern Bulgaria. It lies at the foot of the Rila and Pirin Mountains, just one and a half hours' ride from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. The town serves as the cultural center of the region with a professional theater, an opera house, a national folk ensemble, numerous art galleries, cinemas, preserved traditional architecture, and a local sports federation.
Bulgaria, a southeastern European country of great natural beauty, borders Greece, Turkey, Macedonia, Serbia, Romania and the Black Sea. Bulgaria has been the site of several great civilizations including the legendary Thracians. It was the center of early Slavonic culture, home of Orthodox Christianity, part of the Byzantine Commonwealth, subject to Ottoman rule, and has been the celebrant of several national revivals. In 1989, a peaceful end to the communist regime in Bulgaria put the country on the road to democratic development and a free market economy.
