Bishop's University is an institution whose primary concern is to offer quality education to undergraduate students in the humanities, education, social sciences, natural sciences, and business administration. Our academic programs are broadly-based and stress the interrelationships of disciplines in addition to their specializations. Emphasis is placed on personal contact between faculty and students through small classes and frequent use of seminars and laboratories. The residential aspect and small size encourage an informal atmosphere in academic, social, cultural and sporting situations. Students enjoy facilities such as: a theatre which offers various dramatic productions, concerts and films; an art gallery with frequent exhibitions; a sports complex with tennis and squash courts, indoor and outdoor pools, gymnasium, weight training room, martial arts space and dance studio. Annual full-time enrolment at Bishop's is around 1900 students. Students come from all Canadian provinces, as well as from several foreign countries. The language of instruction at Bishop's is English.

LOCATION: The location of Bishop's University combines the advantages of being close to several major cities with being in one of the most beautiful rural areas of Canada. Bishop's is only five minutes from Sherbrooke, a predominantly French-speaking city of more than 100,000 people. For those of all backgrounds, our bilingual environment offers a truly enriching opportunity. Montreal is less than two-hours away and can be reached by car or bus. Ottawa, Toronto, Quebec City, New York and Boston are within a half day's drive. Lennoxville is located just north of the American border states of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The beauty of the Eastern Townships of Quebec, with its mountains, rivers, and lakes, invites residents and tourists alike to enjoy a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, including downhill/cross-country skiing, and horseback riding.

LENNOXVILLE: Settled in 1819, Lennoxville took its name from Charles Lennox, Duke of Richmond, who was then Governor General. The town's full-time population of some 4,000 residents is augmented for nine months of the year by the 3,000 university and college students who come to study and live in Lennoxville. Much of Lennoxville's personality and many of its characteristics have been shaped by students from around the world who have come here to study for over 150 years. Lennoxville is proud of its small-town, co-operative community spirit which brings together people from many nationalities. There are three banks, a large grocery store, a variety of restaurants and shops.

CLIMATE: With the change of seasons in southern Quebec, you will need a variety of clothing for warmer weather (September & April), as well as cooler fall (October & November) and winter temperatures (December through  March). You will need boots, gloves/mittens, hats, scarves, and jackets/coats  for the rain and snow. Sherbrooke has several large department stores and the main mall has many shops offering a selection of styles and prices from which to choose. Bishop's students in general dress casually: T-shirts, pants, jeans, and sweaters for both men and women.

HOUSING: Finding your own accommodations :

On-campus residence halls are only for the academic time periods, residences are not offered during the summer, so alternate living arrangements are necessary. Off-campus housing prices vary between US$130 and US$350 a month.

Student Residences - there are six on-campus residence halls with a full meal plan, and an off-campus housing office. The on campus rooms are fully furnished with utilities, cable TV, on site security and janitorial service. On campus residency costs between US$209 and US$255 dollars a month depending on a single or double occupancy room. Meals are between US$167 and US$206 dollars a month. Each semester, Bishop's University residents pay for their meal plan in four installments as part of their monthly rent.

RESIDENCE ACADEMIC CALENDAR: Bishop's academic calendar year starts in late August and it is organized in two semesters.

    Spring Semester: Early March-Mid July
    Fall Semester: Late August-Mid December

PROFILE: Simon Fraser University is an excellent university on the west coast of Canada . Simon Fraser consistently ranks as one of the top institutions in the Maclean's magazine annual survey of Canadian universities. The university's reputation rests on its ability to find "creative solutions to the challenges presented by an ever-evolving world," and on its tradition of flexibility, commitment to choice, and passion for innovation.

LOCALE: SFU is located on top of 400 meter-high Burnaby Mountain , less than 16 kilometers from the center of Vancouver . Spectacular 360-degree views of snow-capped mountains, ocean inlets and islands make our campus unique. ROOM AND BOARD: The Residences on the west end of campus are all the student residences. The farthest out are the 4-bedroom townhouses with their panoramic view of the inlet and north shore mountains. A large parking lot for residents is in the center of all the other buildings: Hamilton Hall for graduate students and their families, Louis Riel House for families with children and single students living together, coed units McTaggart-Cowan Hall and Shell House with shared bathrooms and kitchens, and Madge Hogarth House for women only, on the north side of the parkade just past the tennis court. Student leaders in each residence are available to help out with questions and concerns, and to plan social events for residents. All residences have kitchen areas, but there is no meal plan. Students can buy a debit card for campus cafeterias at the beginning of each semester, and meals will be charged to that lump sum. Office of Residence and Housing can also help in finding off-campus housing. There is a wide range of housing, including apartments, houses, and townhouses, near the University. From May to August, student residences offer a place to stay for part of the summer accommodation.
