    Program Description

CSU-IP students take Chinese language and culture classes offered by the School of Overseas Studies at Peking University in Beijing. Chinese language classes are offered at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. All students are required to take "Chinese Conversation" and "Readings in Chinese" and are divided according to their individual skills in speaking and reading. In addition, depending on their skill levels, students can take "Listening in Chinese," "Writing Chinese Characters," "Newspaper Readings," and other special subjects in Chinese economics, history, music, politics and religion to further their study and appreciation of China and its culture.

All participants will begin their studies in mid-July with a required Preparatory Language Program (PLP). In addition to intensive instruction in the Mandarin language, IP participants are introduced through lectures and local tours to Chinese culture and society.

IP students who are fluent in Mandarin (reading, written and oral fluency) may take regular courses in selected Peking University departments. Most offerings in Chinese literature, history, and philosophy are open to visiting international students, although the range of such courses varies from year to year. Sometimes Peking University will provide a tutor to assist visiting international students who enroll in regular courses.
