Profile: Founded in 1963 as a university based on Chinese language and culture, CUHK has developed into a multilingual, international comprehensive institution. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is one of eight government-funded institutions of higher education but the university functions as a self-governing institution and receives its finances from government grants, student tuition fees and private donations.

Competitive admission to CUHK is based on passing the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination after seven years of secondary education. Both English and Chinese examinations must be passed. University programs lead to Bachelor's, Master's, doctoral degrees and postgraduate diplomas. Students who satisfy graduation requirements shall be awarded bachelor's degree with one of the classifications: first-, second upper-, second lower-, third- class honors, or pass degree, depending on examination results.

More than 300 courses a year in a variety of subjects are taught in English. Most students are local and trilingual (English, Cantonese and Putonghua); foreign students number about 150. Total enrollment: over 12,000.

Coursework includes lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory work, fieldwork, examinations and research projects. The grading scale runs from A (excellent) to F (failure). The academic year is divided into two terms: September to December and January to May, with examinations scheduled in December and early May.

    • Ideal location for the study of "greater China" -Hong Kong, China, Macau, Taiwan - as well as South East Asia.
    • Campus offers excellent research, language study, cultural and sports facilities.
    • Cosmopolitan environment with easy access to South China and South East Asia.

Locale: Hong Kong was British-governed for over 156 years until it returned to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997. Hong Kong is one of the world's major ports, an international trade and finance center that draws tourists and business travelers from all over the world. Hong Kong Island (32 sq. mi.), Kowloon Peninsula (3 sq. mi.) and New Territories (356 sq. mi.) have a population of 6.9 million. Hong Kong has train, plane and/or ferry service to Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and other major cities in China. The campus is located in the New Territories, 20 minutes by train/car from the bustle of urban Hong Kong. Set on a green hillside overlooking Tolo Harbor, it is 13 miles from downtown Kowloon and is connected to the city by highly efficient public transportation.

Divisions: Faculties of Arts (Chinese language and literature, English, English language, fine arts, intercultural studies, history, Japanese studies, modern languages, music, philosophy, religious studies, theology, and translation); Business Administration (accountancy, decision sciences and managerial economics, finance, hotel management, international business, management, and marketing); Engineering (computer science, computer engineering, electronic engineering, information engineering, mechanical & automation engineering, and systems engineering & engineering management); Science (biochemistry, biology, chemistry, environmental science, food & nutritional sciences, mathematics, physics, and statistics); Social Science (anthropology, architecture, economics, gender studies, geography, government & public administration, journalism & communication, psychology, social work, and sociology).

Academic notes: Courses offered in English vary from year to year. Consult your ISEP coordinator for details. There are course offerings in contemporary China studies and Hong Kong studies which are recommended. Only undergraduate placements are available. CUHK welcomes many foreign students each year to its International Asian Studies Program and Chinese Language Center, which offer English-taught Asian studies and Chinese language courses respectively. ISEP students may take courses and share services of the Office of International Studies Programs. Extra-curricular activities including teaching-in-china programs are organized for international students.

Language notes: Knowledge of Chinese is an advantage but not a requirement. ISEP students will be able to attend Putonghua (Mandarin) or Cantonese classes at the renowned Yale-in-China Chinese Language Center ( http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/lac/ ) during the academic year. Students should note that intensive Chinese language training is not part of the regular undergraduate programs and is not included in ISEP benefits. Some financial assistance may be available on application. Further details are available from the Office International Studies Programs.

Room and board: College residence halls on campus provide room and board. Most rooms house two or three students and ISEP students are assigned roommates from the local area. Single rooms are not available. A stipend will be provided for meals, which can be taken at CUHK cafeterias. No married student housing is available.

Exchange dates: Late August to May or January to May.

Special conditions: Students interested in studying at CUHK should be advised that a preliminary list of English-taught courses for the following academic year will be available in mid-June on the CUHK Web site ( http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/oisp ). Courses offered by the Faculties of Medicine and Education are not available to international students
