Study Abroad Information for International Students

International students enrolling in a recognized credit earning study abroad program outside the US must complete the following before leaving the US:

  1. Download and fill in the “Request for I-20/ Leave of Absence” form from the International Student Center (ISC) web site at: http://www.sa.sdsu.edu/isc/currentforms.htm
  2. Obtain proof of study abroad acceptance from your department or the SDSU Education Abroad Office
  3. Make an appointment to meet with an ISC Advisor.  Take the leave of absence form, and proof of placement, along with your passport to the appointment.

Failure to notify the International Student Center of your study abroad enrollment will result in your SEVIS record being terminated.  You will then be unable to re-enter the US until a new I-20 form has been issued for you.  Issuance of a new I-20 form may cause you to lose your eligibility for OPT upon your return.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact an ISC advisor at 619 594-1982.
